Abstract
Wastewaters from the dairy industry could pollute mainly the environment because of the organic
matter they contain; consequently, they should be treated before discharge into surface waters. Most
of the wastewater volume generated in the dairy industry results from cleaning of transport lines
and equipment between production cycles, cleaning of tank trucks, washing of milk silos and
equipment malfunctions. The nutrients contained in wastewater feed algae blooms that deplete
dissolved oxygen, damage habitats for fish nurseries and threaten leisure activities. Conventional
treatment of dairy wastewater involves aerobic processes, since fats, lactose and proteins are all
easily degraded by bacterial populations. Only recently, the use of sequential aerated reactor
systems has been studied, mainly at pilot plant level, for the treatment of specific food-technology
wastewaters. However, this technological approach has not been sufficiently investigated in order to
better define the impact of each reactor on the whole treatment-plant performance.
This work is focused on the study and the development of a performing treatment process of dairy
wastewater produced by Sini cheese factory using a three aerated cascade reactor.
The general objectives of studying were :
- assessment of treatment performances;
- characterization of three-stage aeration process;
- evaluation of population dynamics for protozoan and bacterial communities;
- assessment of possible relationship performance/microbiota;
- operative condition optimization.
