Abstract
In the directive 2000/60/CEE (WFD) the necessity to cope and to safeguard the water environment is strongly stressed. A rational and scienti c handling of the resources is needed. After a rst overview to identify the more suitable numerical tool to be applied in the transitional and coastal environments, the chosen mod- el has been calibrated on real cases to contribute to solve the ecosystem management problem. Three locations have been chosen as case studies: the rst is the Venice Lagoon, the second is the Gulf of Cagliari and the last is the system 'Gulf of Oristano-Cabras pool'. In the rst location, the Venice Lagoon, the anthropogenic impact on the ecosystem over medium time range, have been studied. Speci cally the action of the arti cial structures built at the lagoon inlets, have been investigated. These barriers are part of the MOSE Project. The results of this work give information about possible local changes of velocity and residence time, perhaps due to the new arti cial structures at the inlets. The whole study has become part of the material collected by the Venice Lagoon Natural Observatory. The model has been calibrated for the Venice Lagoon to reproduce the salinity eld. The main aim was to propose a division and classi cation of the lagoon in areas, as asked in the directive. The comparison between mod- elled and measured salinity elds showed a really satisfactory match. Particularly the e ects of high interannual spatial variability of the parameters on the classi cation and typologies are shown. The produced dataset has also been used by other research groups to be correlated with sedimentological variables and to do a zoning based on physiographic factors. In the Gulf of Cagliari the hydrodynamic and water quality model has been applied to verify the system answer to di erent managing hypothesis for the use of coastal and waste waters. This activity stressed the response of the system under di erent wind regimes and permitted to evaluate the e ects on coastal water quality of the nutrient variation, in terms of quantity and distribution. In the Gulf of Oristano the characteristics of the transport scales have been investigated. The e ects of possible changes in the geometry of the interconnection channel between the gulf and the Cabras pool have been studied to de ne the hydrological and water quality characteristics of the pool. The results permit to identify the high risk areas where pollutant can accumulate. Speci cally, the e ect of an higher water exchange between the gulf and the pool on the organic matter accumulation and on sheries has been evaluated. This information has been presented to the local authorities as an additional help in the management of the area. The project presented here succeeded in supplying a unique tool able to integrate a large database for the management. It has been possible to help the local municipalities not only to solve speci c management cases, with comparison with measured data, but even to develop a working platform useful for future activities.
