Abstract
The point of depart is the discovery on the Caelian
Hill in Rome, in 1885, of a serie of sculptures connected with the pagan
Oriental cults and of a statue of Agrippina Minor, wife of Claudius. The
paper considers the possible relationship between these manufacts and some
sanctuaries, known from the literary sources (like the Iseum Metellinum) or
recently excavated on the Caelian, like the Basilica Hilariana, in which
Cybele and Attis were worshipped and the religious community of the
dendrophori gathered. The conclusions put in light how the Julio-Claudian
emperors and Antoninus Pius were interested in these cults.
