Abstract
The future of human reproduction is subject to revolutionary scientific and technological developments. In recent decades, procreation has undergone significant evolution to the point where sexual reproduction is no longer the only form of human reproduction. However, the ‘reproductive paradigm’ could soon change again in a radical manner. Cloning, parthenogenesis, the ability to derive gametes from somatic cells, genetic manipulation, and artificial wombs (ectogenesis) open up futuristic scenarios. However, new reproductive technologies not only promote reproductive autonomy, allowing people to have a biological child even if they no longer have gametes, but they could also change the contours of ‘human reproduction’. The ability of new reproductive technologies to significantly alter or, in the long run, render existing reproductive practices obsolete should not be underestimated. At risk is not only sexual reproduction: even birth (both gestation and childbirth) within a human body could become immoral – a choice morally irresponsible.
