Abstract
The marine environment plays a key role in climate balance by representing a valuable source of economic resources, social welfare and quality of life. The quality of marine environment is given by a variety of aspects, amongst which "sounds" are of fundamental importance as they support the life cycle of marine species." In water, acoustic signals propagate rapidly and with a low absorption coefficient. Many marine animals have adopted strategies for communication through the use of acoustic signals. Over the past decade, many studies have highlighted the effect of acoustic disturbance on marine organisms and marine habitats. The sound associated with marine traffic, seismic survey, sonar and many other sources of use in anthropogenic activities induce different kinds of effects such as habitat loss, and physiological damage, especially in marine mammals. Noise is considered one of the major pollutants of the 21st century, is listed in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS, 1982) and after more than 25 years it has been included in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56 / EC. In this context, the environmental sound is studied by making use of passive acoustic monitoring (PAM). PAM aims at investigating the vocal repertoire of the target marine organisms acoustically without any interference, disturbance, or stressor, and at intercepting the acoustic sources that alter or modify the loss of biodiversity in order to promote actions addressed to the marine environment conservation. This thesis has investigated two topics inherent to marine acoustics: ecological processes in relation to anthropogenic impacts by studying the underwater soundscape; the acoustic communication signals of the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) by analyzing the acoustic parameters of its acoustic repertoire during a stress event."
