Abstract
Context & Aims This research was carried out in stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) stands of the Italian coastline, in order to analyse the tree-growth variability at spatial and temporal scale, evaluate the radial growth response to climatic conditions over the last century, and investigate significant cyclic patterns in the tree-ring chronologies. Methods The clustering techniques were used to identify groups with similar growth patterns among the standardized tree-ring chronologies. The growth rate during the last century was analysed using the “age band decomposition – ABD” method. Climate/growth relationships and their stationarity over time were computed by means of correlation and moving correlation functions. To investigate significant cyclicities the spectral analysis techniques were applied. Results The main grouping of trees with the same variability was related to site effects. The decrease in radial tree-growth rate, observed mainly from the second half of twentieth century, was correlated with the significant decline in precipitation. Tree-growth showed a higher sensitivity to the previous November monthly precipitation. Since the 1960s the summer temperatures were negatively correlated and showed a significant increase. Conclusion The results highlighted the influence of precipitation on tree-growth and the effects of site to define the main growth patterns. These findings can help to identify the sustainable management tools to improve the stand stability and efficiency in coastal environments of the Mediterranean basin.
