Abstract
In recent years, the wood chips has been largely used by power plants of different kinds as biofuel in order to produce heat or electricity. The use of wood chip represents today a valuable solution to valorize the residues coming from agricultural and forestry management, as well as for the utilization of worthless woody material that otherwise should be disposed.
When we talk about the energetic yield of the product, the fuel storability, and the market price, the aspects linked to wood chip quality assumes great importance. In this regard, a good particle size distribution and the right moisture content of the wood fuel determine the value of the product.
In particular, the particle size influences the typology of power plant that can utilize the fuel. For instance, the presence of over measured particles may determine problems in small and medium scale power plants. On the other hand, a product with particles too small may compromise the preservation of the fuel that can be easily degraded by microorganisms during storage, determining dry matter losses.
Among the technical innovations developed till now to improve the particle size characteristics of wood chips, there are those concerning the mechanical chipping systems. Working and improving these kind of systems may represent the most valuable way to improve one or more aspects related to the quality of this product. In this regard, the present research led to develop a new cutting device to be installed on existing machines for responding to the requirements of the market, producing chips of larger size with optimal characteristics for an efficient combustion.
