Abstract
P.G. Sperandeo and Russian Studies in Odessa: On the History of Russian-Italian Grammaticography at the Turn of the 20th Century
The present article undertakes a reconstruction of the pedagogical work of Prisco Giovanni Sperandeo in Odessa at the turn of the 20th century. A thorough analysis of his textbooks, with particular reference to the Manualetto della lingua russa, reveals a marked departure from the academic rigidity of his predecessor, Domenico De Vivo, towards a pragmatic, contrastive approach.
Sperandeo’s pedagogical approach, situated within the multicultural context of Odessa, placed significant emphasis on practical communication and intercultural mediation. His contribution is of seminal importance in the history of Russian-Italian language teaching, marking a crucial phase prior to the official institutionalisation of Slavistics in Italy.
