Abstract
Bioenergy has been rapidly emerging as a top priority in the international agenda as countries face the triple challenges of ensuring food security, energy security and sustainable development. In this respect, sustainability is a key element. Biomass accounts for approximately 10% of total primary energy consumed globally and for about 94% of renewable energy, but not all of it is used in a sustainable manner. Most of the recent increase in the use of biofuels occurred in North America and Europe. However, projections to 2030 show significant shifts in bioenergy production which positive impacts will depend on the sustainability approach. Scenarios for bioenergy developments in various regions and countries are examined, analysing also challenges to be addressed. A specific case study is addressed, looking at Italy and Argentina at comparison. Further to an overview of the most important existing initiatives on bioenergy, the research analyses opportunities and challenges of bioenergy development under the three pillars of sustainable development (environmental, social and economic). In light of this, the research develops a methodology for a qualitative integrated assessment (IA) of different types of bioenergy and related sustainability aspects. This holistic approach represents the basis of a multi criteria assessment highlighting the intersection aspects of bioenergy and sustainability. The research does not conclude electing a “best bioenergy option” but recognizes that some bioenergy options appear to be potentially more sustainable than others, especially those that are most suitable in the tropics.
