Abstract
Ensuring food security will be one of the biggest challenges that the agriculture industry will be facing in the future globally, considering all the negative repercussions that climate change will have on crops. Current agricultural systems with high inputs and intense use of resources are one of the causes of deforestation, water scarcity, soil depletion, biodiversity loss, resistance to pathogens, and high levels of greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn can no longer guarantee sustainable agri-food production. Sustainable agricultural practices have the potential to reverse the trend of conventional agriculture. The research has allowed the study of sustainable cropping systems (in terms of production and environmental impact) and the evaluation of durum wheat varieties with greater performance concerning management, water availability, and different input levels of fungicides. In particular, two of the world’s main crops have been studied, which are the basis of global and Mediterranean nutrition: wheat and potatoes, with world production of 771 million tons and 376 million tons, respectively (data for the year 2021). These were initially studied in a long-term rotation system. The evaluation was carried out by adopting three different soil treatments (plowing, subsoiling, and spading machine) and two different fertilization sources (mineral and organic). During the years of study, the account has been taken of how these reacted to the different thermo-pluviometric trends and how they interfered with the quality and components of the soil, weeds, and productivity. In parallel, the evaluation of durum wheat was explored in depth in a second experiment, in which the possible adaptation strategies to climate change were explained in the testing of 15 varieties which were tested using increasingly technological and universal evaluation protocols, such as VCU (Value for Cultivation and Use). The objective was to assess the performance of varieties and their characteristics with different management approaches to predict the use of more drought-resistant varieties, capable of using water resources more efficiently and adapting better to new environmental conditions while maintaining high nutritional qualities. In particular, performance was evaluated under two different management regimes relating to fungicides and growth regulators (PGR), called Full and Minimal, and under an organic approach and an irrigation regime. The assessments carried out can help to better understand the environmental impacts that agricultural management has on the various components of the system, to choose the best alternatives to enhance production, quality, and the economic-environmental impact.
