Abstract
XML is now ten years old and is a well-know and largely used standard, being moreover characterized by an on-going evolution. This paper covers the main steps of its history, starting from the reasons behind its creation, mainly the great diffusion of the WorldWideWeb, and the relationship with its progenitor, SGML. The other technologies which compose the global scheme, such as stylesheets and query languages, are also presented, together with the relationship between XML and the other digital information paradigms, such as relational databases or formats used by Office Automation suites.
