Abstract
Growing threats fomented by populism and far-right governments have fuelled armed conflicts around the world. As a result, democracy and the rule of law are under threat, as if the echoes of the disasters of the last century were no longer being heard. Hate speech is thus becoming more and more widespread, both in public and private spaces, and is fuelling discrimination against women, immigrants, the LGBT+ community and all ‘others’. In this regard, the initial findings of a larger study conducted through a quantitative-qualitative questionnaire in Italian secondary schools are presented. The study aims to identify prejudices and stereotypes, but also to explore participants’ emotions in order to challenge the foundations of hate speech and to promote a society that values diversity, solidarity and respect for others as key principles of democratic education. Initial results reveal that some students find it difficult to accept phenomena such as women’s emancipation and LGBT+ rights. They also highlight the urgent need to incorporate sexual and affective-sexual education into school curricula.
