Abstract
The goals of this thesis are two: firstly to understand how and to what extent the demographic structure of the national vineyard area has changed, with regional and varietal detail and secondly to understand the role of grape varieties in the price formation.
A unique methodology was proposed to measure the demographic dynamics of the Italian vineyards. This showed that in the period from 1970-2010, the aging and the decline of the production base are the long-term effects of: i) business investment decision and are only recently in recovery after a declining phase; ii) the long-term diffusion of early explants and iii) that of leaving plants in production beyond their economic life. The method was used also to make predictions about the breadth of the production base by 2030 according to different hypotheses of business behaviour and policy development.
The influence of the grape variety on the price of wine is estimated with the hedonic price method applied to Italian wines reviewed in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
The results show that the varieties play a very important role in the formation of the price. Almost all the varieties included in the models show a significant influence on the price. In general, the impact of varieties is greater and positive in the case of red, while it is smaller and more negative in the case of white. For the latter, there is a greater influence and even more positive influence from the specific denomination. In most cases, PPs ticked by the specific denomination have higher values.
Comparing the dynamics of the vineyard surface and the performance of the wines on the market, we can observe variable relationships: for some vines, such as Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero, Primitivo and Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the production choices are rewarded by the market. However, for others, for example Vermentino and Nebbiolo, divergent results are observed that reveal complex strategies of the companies and, in several cases, some rigidity in the productive system.
