Abstract
This scientific research concerns an issue about agricultural dust dispersed in the workplace atmosphere. In a general way we can classify the dusts’ health risk for workers on the basis of damages severity that they can cause: when the damage covers only worker’s health we talk about microclimate health risk; on the other hand if the damages cover workers’ health and building safety we deals with dust explosion hazard. European Directives ATEX 99/92/EC and 94/9/EC, implemented in Italy by the Republic Presidential Decree 126/1998 and the Title XI of the Legislative Decree 81/2008, aim to improve safety in the places where an explosive atmosphere can form.
One protection measure to mitigate the effects of dust explosion consists on putting venting surfaces on the volume that we want to protect (silos, equipment or building). These surfaces allow the combustion products, the ashes and flame escaping and the explosion pressure fixed at a low level.
Current technical standards for the design of venting systems (NFPA 68-2007, VDI 3673-2002 and UNIEN 14491:2006) consider the turbulence of the flame on the dimensioning secondarily. Instead of the use of computer codes used for the same purpose are expensive and they need expert technicians about dust explosion dynamics and programming languages knowledge.
In this context, it was derived an empirical correlation based on experimental data of the scientific literature to size vent surfaces to take in account the intensity of turbulence in the volume to be protected, We can apply this formula to easy shape volume to protect.
