Abstract
First edition, including transcription, translation and commentary, of a small Pahlavi text, the Nērang ī pēšag ud sāmān (ms. TD2, Fols. 212 a, l. 9–213 b, l. 4), containing the words that should be pronounced by a priest during the complex ritual of ablution called Baršnūm in Pahlavi, to gain back purity after body contamination with dead matter. This text has the typical features of late Phl. ones. Interestingly, it provides a list of body-part terms (BPT), some of which ha¬pax in Phl., that contribute to our knowledge of both Phl. vocabulary and ethnographic conceptions about body categorization. From the lexical point of view, this text differs greatly from the PdV (and ZFJ) passages describing the Baršnūm ritual, which constitute its original source; a thorough comparison of the relevant lexical items may offer insights on the issue of the stratification of Phl. lexicon, that involves textual typological differences, but also diachronic and diatopic peculiarities.
