Abstract
The paper deals with the problem of preservation and open distribution of university courseware.
After discussing the nature of courseware and the differences between courseware and traditional learning objects, a number of experiences of open courseware distribution (inculding MIT open courseware) are examined.
The paper argues for the need of a stronger integration between institutional repositories and OCW systems, while taking into account the educational nature of courseware by using for it both DC and LOM metadata. The final section describes the use of such a model by Tuscia University, where DSpace is used as repository for courseware and an external eXist database is used as tool for indexing (and retrieving) LOM metadata.
