Abstract
The topic of this paper is the figurative senses of the main Italian leave-taking greetings, i.e. addio, arrivederci, buonanotte, buonasera, ciao, ti saluto, tanti saluti. The use of leave-taking formulas in functions other than that of greeting, such as the use of ciao in accetterò la sua proposta e ciao, is widespread in Italian, however it has never been investigated. Therefore, the paper first aims to provide a detailed description of such uses, based both on information that can be obtained from lexicographic sources and data from corpora. It will then be argued that these uses can be described, rather than as ironic as dictionaries suggest, as genuinely metaphorical, since they exploit the reference to the farewell conceptual frame to express concepts such as leaving, ending, and disagreeing.
