Abstract
Phytotechnologies are all the applications that use plants to interact with contaminants located in environmental media. A correct use of phytotecnologies is strictly linked to a deep knowledge of plant – contaminant interaction mechanism. This study explores three different kinds of plant – contaminant interaction. The first case study aimed to evaluate interaction between Phragmites australis and a heavy metal polluted sediment (Zn, Cu). The study explored the possibility of use Phragmites australis to control environmental risks of an artificial pond filled with the tested sediement. In the second study the willow tree toxicity test was tested in two different conditions; first condition aimed to optimize Zn bioavailability in water, in the second condition, a low zinc bioavailability was tested. The third study focused on heavy hydrocarbons interactions with populous and black locust grown on the top of an old abandoned industrial landfill. The aim was to verify a relationship between heavy hydrocarbons located in the substratum (soil and waste) and the heavy hydrocarbons located in leaves and young branch of poplar and black locust. The analysis was addressed to verify the possibility to use phytoscreening technology to describe a heavy hydrocarbons contamination in soil.
