Abstract
Cities are responsible for more than 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To maximize Ecosystem Services (ES), proper planning of urban green areas is necessary. The sequestration of air pollutants is one of the main ES that urban forests provide to citizens. The atmospheric concentration of various pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO2), tropospheric ozone (O3) and particulate matter (PM) can be reduced by urban trees through adsorption and deposition processes. It was predicted the amount of CO2, O3 and PM removed by urban tree species with the AIRTREE multilayer canopy model in two urban parks (Castel di Guido Park and Valentino Park), in a peri-urban park (Presidential Estate of Castelporziano) and in street trees in the cities of Milan and Bologna.
The work on the two urban parks consisted of extensive in situ measurements and modelling analyses of tree characteristics to provide realistic estimates. In the Presidential Estate of Castelporziano, were integrated ground-level and satellite measurements to estimate the sequestering capacity of atmospheric pollutants from the atmosphere, transported to the study site in particular from the city of Rome. On the other hand, vegetation maps were used for the street trees in Milan and Bologna, which were developed through a supervised classification algorithm, trained on remote sensing images, supplemented by the inventory of local trees and used as input for the AIRTREE model.
Among many results, the two urban parks showed a total annual removal of 1005 and 500 kg of carbon per hectare, 8.1 and 1.42 kg of ozone per hectare and 8.4 and 8 kg of PM10 per hectare. In the Castelporziano Estate, on the other hand, due to a significant loss of forest cover, estimated by satellite data at -6.8% between 2014 and 2020, it was found that carbon sink capacity decreased by 34% during the period considered. In addition, the deposition of pollutants on tree crowns decreased by 39%, 46% and 35% for PM, NO2 and O3, respectively.
Going deeper into the city and examining the urban greenery of the street trees in Milan and Bologna, both cities found a large presence of deciduous broadleaf trees, which showed a greater capacity to sequester CO2 (3,953. 280 g m2 y-1), O3 (5677.76 g m2 y-1) and NO2 (2358.30 g m2 y-1) than evergreen needle-leaves, which, on the other hand, showed higher performance in removing particulate matter (14711.29 g m2 y-1 and 1964.91 g m2 y-1 for PM10 and PM2.5, respectively). It has been identified the tree species with the highest carbon uptake capacity, with values of up to 1025.47 g CO2 m2 y-1 for Celtis australis, Platanus x acerifolia, Ulmus pumila and Quercus rubra. Furthermore, it was estimated that trees in Milan are able to sequester the CO2 emissions of 460 vehicles per year (0.06% of the car fleet circulating in Milan in one year). For PM, on the other hand, it was estimated that trees in Milan sequester the emissions of 16000 vehicles per year (2.28% of the car fleet circulating in Milan in one year).
In light of impending and unprecedented policy measures to plant millions of trees in urban areas, this study highlights the importance of developing an integrated approach that combines field surveys, modelling, and satellite data to link air quality and green plant functionality as key elements in improving ES provision in cities. Thanks to these studies, it is possible to understand which species, or better still which species associations, should be chosen according to the specific city context and the type of pollution in that city in order to achieve the best performance. Since this study can be replicated in any context, it becomes a valuable aid tool for green planners in municipalities.
