Abstract
Male violence against women is often framed in an episodic way, as an 'individual' deviance, thus, as a problem pertaining to the sphere of private relationships. Attention is thus diverted from its structural causes - rooted in the inequality of material and symbolic power between men and women - thus depriving the phenomenon of its public relevance and its political significance. Men's violence against women, on the other hand, is rooted in the inequalities of power operating in societies and is to be considered the instrument through which men try to preserve, within society, their position of material and symbolic dominance over women. With this paper we propose an analysis of the reflections on gender-based violence, with an emphasis on the discourses that help to frame the issue from a socio-political perspective and that focus on gender-based violence as a tool through which patriarchal society reproduces itself.
