Abstract
The reliability of airborne laser scanning (ALS) technology is widely tested for the assessment of wood volume and biomass of forest stands, but its potential is rarely fully exploited to support forest management planning. This paper provides a methodology for exploting ALS data to this end, with reference to a case study in Sardinia (Italy). Both ground and ALS data are integrated according to an area-based approach and statistically elaborated by ratio estimation. The obtained wood volume map, compatible with the ratio estimation carried out, is an effective support for planning silvicultural interventions.
