Abstract
Aim of this study is to define relationships between a few ecological and productive parameters describing the stand status and its dynamics, (LAI, PAR, litter, stand growth) and radial stem growth in broadleaved (Turkey oak, chestnut and beech) aged coppices under conversion into high forest (the transitory crops phase). The stands are aged between 28 and 64 and have been managed according to different thinning regimes. The analysis has been carried out on permanent experimental sites established in 1990 and located in Monte Amiata (SI) and Alpe di Catenaia (AR). The impact of silvicultural practices and the sustainability of the applied practices have been evaluated individually by analysing crown cover, stand productivity and stem growth. Interaction between these parameters has been determined by a multivariate analysis. Results highlighted the productivity and the extremely dynamic phase in progress into the stands object of the study. The work provided two types of deliverables: a methodological way, aimed at establishing an alternative method of stand monitoring and at checking the overall effectiveness and sustainability of the applied techniques. A practical way of working, able to point out both the suited indicators and to identify the optimal time for thinning performance.
