Abstract
Many small lakes have aroused fantasies, stories, myths, and legends. Some are still present on Italian territory; others are almost drying up or completely disappeared. The most peculiar are lakes of modest dimensions, of sub-circular shape, that have originated on our territory due to sudden events in ancient epochs and have remained alive for some years, decades, or hundreds of years. Among this artistic inspiration are the karst sinking lakes (like Sirino Lake) or the piping sinkholes (like Accesa Lake, Telese Lake, Pergusa Lake). Moreover, they have always aroused interest and fear in the ancient lakes from which gas (Boracifero Lake) or Mephitic vapors (Ansanto Lake) had opalescent waters and thermal waters (Acque Albule lakes). All these lakes have in common the presence of one or more factors of geological hazard. They could represent an excellent example (geosites) to be used for a more aware environmental education on the relative “hidden” risks in the territories surrounding them.
