Abstract
Main aim of the present PhD thesis is to define a model of performance of Academic Life Science Spin-Offs, geographically located across the territory of Lazio Region (Italy) . The research is based on the assumption that a correct configuration and combination of resources, skills, social relations and innovation, generally speaking of all those critical factors affecting performance, can guarantee a Spin-Off survival in the medium to long term, in order to offer a more effective response to the challenges of the market . This involves the need to identify, within the model of analysis, the best possible configuration of the variables generating a long and positive business performance, so to maximize customer satisfaction and address the strategies of competitors improving the market position and the creation of a competitive advantage.
The first part of the study analyzes the context within which they have evolved and operate the various Spin-Offs . Starting from the to terminology related to these innovative companies, the present study focuses on the different forms of Spin -Offs and the role that universities have taken on in the so-called "Academic Entrepreneurship". In particular, their placement is analyzed within a framework that has long been affected by provisions of a general nature, but today (at least in Italy ) seems to have outlined a new model of development through a framework of development providing fiscal and financial incentives for the start up.
Tthe second part of the work shows the research design used for the study. The first methodology used, the Systematic Review, aims to highlight the most relevant aspects, the main variables and results recorded at the international scientific level about the variables under study. Another approach is represented by the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA ) used to obtain the analysis of a compared multiple case study..
The third part of the present work focuses on a systematic review of the extant literature in order to explain the causal conditions affecting their performance. In particular, we proceeded to draw a model of development of the theoretical performance of Spin-Off.companies.
The most representative variables of this model have been highlighted in order to show, for each one of them, the potential and their factual impact in business management and more specifically in their ability to generate positive benefits .
The final part of the present work represents the theoretical model. It was tested by the analysis of a multiple comparative case study, conducted within the Lazio Region and referred to the academic spin-offs that operate within the framework of "life Science". Applying the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) it has been possible to identify the best parsimonious configuration that explains the performance of companies. The conclusions present and discuss the results of the empirical model through a comparison with results from the literature.
