Abstract
The research aimed to investigate environmentally friendly cleaning of contaminated soil by
hexachlorocyclohexane ( , , and HCH) isomers in the basin of river Sacco near to Rome
interdicted to food-agricultural activities.
Preliminary studies have been performed to select candidate bacteria and hybrid poplars able to
reclaim contaminated soil by HCH isomers with concentrations that are spotty above law soil limits
fixed for green areas. Poplar clone grew on the soil amended with commercial chemical or with
microorganisms known for its own degradation ability of chlorinated organics able to stimulate root
growth and biomass production. In particular have been tested degrader bacterium and fungi studied
in IBAF-CNR institute in past research similar contaminants. The simultaneous presence of ORCchemical
served to enhance the degrading microbiological activity by the continuum oxygen supply
of this compound in presence of water.
These studies were performed in the glasshouse and three candidate clones were finally selected
for an experimental “in situ” application of 0.4 Ha in the contaminated area. I-214, AF2 and
Monviso were those showing growth characteristics and response to contaminants that have been
considered useful for a rhizodegradation application. In the field application they are planted at high
density for short rotation coppice (SRC). Monviso clone showed both the highest HCH degradation
alone and with inoculated bacteria, for this reason, to optimize the phytoremediation of polluted
soil, more studies were performed in the glasshouse. This studies confirmed Monviso clone suitable
for phytoremediation testing as it showed HCH isomers degradation under the various treatments
and in particular evidences significantly reduced recalcitrant -HCH isomer content in the soil.
However we have to notice that I-214 and AF2 hybrids too can provide rhizosphere conditions
stimulating the HCH degradation and that this clones amended with bacteria and with oxygen
release compound (ORC) enhanced the rhizoremediation field application.
At last it’s economically considerable that the three clones biomass production was as good as in
the uncontaminated areas of the Sacco valley.
