Abstract
The increasing integration of media, digitalization, and communication technologies has
profoundly changed human behavior within the built environment. The fusion of physical and digital domains has generated new hybrid spaces characterized by active, reactive, and interactive experiences. Individuals are no longer passive inhabitants but engaged virtual users. This shift significantly impacts exhibition design, particularly in museums and historical sites, fostering innovative approaches that enhance visitor participation and multisensory engagement. Exhibition design has evolved into a complex intersection of cultural and technological fields, amplifying its potential to communicate meaningfully with diverse audiences. However, traditional design skills and tools are no longer suitable to address thechallenges posed by the interplay of tangible heritage and immaterial digital elements. The main design
challenge is to manage the dualism between the tangible physical domain and the immaterial virtual domain, elevating the visiting experience of ancient cultural heritage to a more participatory and sensory engaged level. This article explores how to balance material and immaterial elements in exhibition design, respecting the physical identity of historical places while promoting a more participatory and sensory-rich visitor experience. The discussion is grounded in a design project developed by students at the University of Rome La Sapienza, offering practical insights, applying a multidisciplinary design methodology, and opening avenues for further interdisciplinary research.
