Abstract
During the spring of 2002 was first reported in Italy (province of Cuneo) the presence of the Chestnut Gall Wasp Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu (Hymenoptera, Cynipidae). This insect is considered one of the world's most damaging pests for the chestnut orchard. This species, originary from China, was accidentally introduced in the course of the Twentieth Century in Japan (1941), Korea (1963) and USA (Georgia, 1974), causing serious damage to chestnut. In Viterbo (Central Italy) this species was first reported in July 2005 on a chestnut orchard, and during 2006 on chestnut coppice too. The Plant Protection Department of University of Tuscia (Viterbo, Italy) started a pluriennial research project aimed to study the biology and control of D. kuriphilus in Latium. The research began with a preliminary analysis of the buds for determining the percentage of infestation. The project also provided chemical control tests in the field. It was realized at “Pomario didattico of the Azienda Agraria of Tuscia University” a rearing of cinipide in cage. During 2008 was introduced and reared in Latium the allochthonous parasitoid Torymus sinensis Kamijo. This is a useful insect from China and it was already utilized in Japan and Piedmont (Northern Italy) for biological control of this pests. During the research, were also carried out investigations on endemic parasitoids of cinipide in the Northern Latium. It was also carried out preliminary research on the electroantennographic (EAG) responses of D. kuriphilus to the volatile compounds of chestnut leaves.
