Abstract
In the field of nuclear fusion research, many challenges have yet to be overcome and many others are on the way. Among these, one concerns plasma heating at very high temperatures. In this context, Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) plays an important role, being one of the first choices among additional heating systems. It generates microwave beams launched directly into the plasma to heat it up. Mirrors are one of the main components of the system, necessary for the transmission and reflection of the microwave beams. Since the reflection is not perfect, a small part of the power transported by the beams is absorbed by the mirror, raising its temperature. This produces deformations of the mirror, causing inefficiencies in its optical performance, resulting in plasma power losses. It is therefore necessary to design mirrors preserving their optical characteristics as much as possible, reducing temperatures and thus deformations. The possibility of applying already known solutions, studying the effects of alternative design choices, cooling systems, materials, geometries, adapting them to new requirements, gave rise to this thesis. It aims to make a contribution to research by finding suitable solutions for the mirrors of the next-generation tokamaks. The technical approach used foresees the definition of CAD models and FEM simulations, using tools based on well-known thermal and structural analysis methodologies. These analyses guide the choices and direct the study that lays the foundations for tomorrow’s developments. The methodology is applied to different mirror topologies and tokamaks such as DTT, DEMO and ST40. DTT represents the main part of the work with the mirrors of the launcher and the transmission line. In DEMO, in addition to the preliminary design of the mirror, various mechanical solutions are proposed for the support structures. Finally, in ST40, a preliminary study of the thermal behaviour of a launcher mirror of its new ECRH is carried out.
