Abstract
The paper examines the development and role of dictionaries of language difficulties in Italy, tracing their delayed emergence compared to other European traditions. The study explores how issues of linguistic insecurity and standardization were addressed through both formal dictionaries and popular linguistic guides. It analyzes the historical factors that influenced their evolution, including Italy’s literacy rates post-unification and the influence of non-academic authors such as journalists. The paper also investigates the normative and descriptive approaches taken by these dictionaries, their impact on language modernization, and their transition into digital formats. Finally, the paper highlights the interplay between prescriptive norms and actual language usage in the Italian lexicographic tradition.
