Abstract
Aim of the research is to evaluate the airborne pollutants concentrations in the exhaust gases produced by the endothermic engines of chainsaws and portable brush-cutters, and to assess the concentrations of some pollutants (including benzene) in the workers’ “respiratory zone”. Moreover a first surveying about the possibility of risk reduction, introducing special fuels and lubricants, has been executed. The concentrations measured have been compared with the emission limit values imposed by law (regarding CO, NOx and HC). The tests have been carried out at the “Machines” laboratory of the Department of Mechanics and Aeronautics of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. The field tests in field have been carried out in forestry yards with portable analyzers. First results demonstrate that every machine seems to respect the emissions limits of HC and NOx, for the first phase of application of the directive 2002/88/CE, while for the second phase the HC+NOx limits are exceeded by some models. Using special mixture the polluting emissions of the most dangerous gases are reduced, also if a perfect carburation of the engines is needed. The field tests have been conduct following mostly brought back how much in European Standard UNI EN 689:1997. This norm previews that the concentrations of CO, Benzene and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are found them through personal samplings are executed with portable analyzers, in our case MultiRAE PGM 50 and UltraRAE PGM 7200. The surveys have been lead near yards of discouragement and collection of the trees and in those of maintenance of the city green. The measured concentrations have been converted in professional exposures, sharing them in the every day working hours and therefore confronted with the limits proposals from following from the ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist), NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration). For the benzene concentrations they have been confronted with the limits of the Italian legislation (D.lgs 66/2000). Therefore it is necessary to execute of the periodic measurements, to form and to inform the personal care the risk, and the workers must be safety accessories.
