Abstract
This dissertation focuses on the organization of the Pinacoteca Capitolina in the XVIII century and examines the relationship between this museum's administration and the contemporary development of painting restoration in Rome. It aims at filling a void left both in previous studies done by historians of restoration and in ones done by museologists, which only touch only briefty on the subject of XVIII century restoration and pay little attention to the developments underway in Rome in this period. The lack of attention to the Roman scenario is particularly surprising, since a good number of the restorers caIled in to restore paintings in the most important collections across ltaly and Europe in the 1700's learned their trade in Rome. The career of the restorer Domenico Michelini makes a good example and the same can be said about the controversy conceming Margherita Bernini's use of egg white as a varnish, both cases that also involved the Pinacoteca's curators, staff and collaborators. The importance of Rome in the field of restoration, and in the generai culturaI and artistic panorama of the XVIII century is in fact linked to the founding of the Pinacoteca Capitolina. This Roman institution represents an important novelty not only for the city itself, but also for the history of European museums. It had in fact the first public museum deparbnent dedicated entirely to painting. In spite of this undoubted peculiarity, this institution has rarely been given due recognition, perhaps precisely because scholars have never bothered to examine the organizational and practical aspects of its' inaugurai period in the seventeenth century. In order to fill the void of documentation concerning this gaIlery in the 1700's, in-depth lll"chivaI research was done for this dissertation, along with the biographical and historicaI research necessary to understand the specific roles played by individuals within the Pinacoteca. The dissertation is thus based not only on unpublished archival documentation concerning the birth of the Pinacoteca Capitolina, but also on the bibliographicaI sources on the subject, starting from known aspects of the history of tbis institution. This method of study has enabled the author to draw a clear outline of the generai context based on solid documentation and to fill it out in great detail.
