Abstract
The interdependence between human activities and natural environment has shaped the forest landscape in Italy, developing and preserving high ecological,economic and cultural landscape values, especially in mountainous areas where the environmental conditions are harder. The altopiano delle Rocche in Central Italy, including Lucoli, Ovindoli, Rocca
di Mezzo and Rocca di Cambio municipalities, is characterized by the conservation of a rich heritage of agricultural and forest biodiversity, which, however, is currently threatened by the extended land abandonment. In the light of this, this territory may be
exploited as remarkable case study for sustainable ecological planning and forest management strategies targeted to stop the agricultural and forest biodiversity progressive loss. The recovery of forest
and agro-pastoral activities should be included under a multifunctional perspective to improve mountainous areas. A broader ethical framework, which takes into
account the intrinsic value of the natural resources,and the participatory approach in the planning process are the cornerstones of the strategy.
Distinctively assessing the economic value of the provision of ecosystem services is essential in order to recover and preserve the traditional land uses according to a sustainable rural management.
