Abstract
Italian Gothic is the latest addition to the prestigious Edinburgh Companions to the Gothic series, published by Edinburgh University Press under the general editorship of Andrew Smith and William Hughes. Each volume in the series provides an overview of the gothic, often from a diachronic and transnational perspective, focusing on specific contexts, texts and themes, as well as from a cross-media angle. Italian Gothic follows two previous successful volumes, also national in scope: American Gothic Culture (2016) and Scottish Gothic (2017). With this editorial framework in mind, the editors of Italian Gothic, Marco Malvestio and Stefano Serafini, underscore the originality of their project in the introduction, which also explains its rationale: ‘This book, the first in the Edinburgh Companions to the Gothic series to focus on a non-English-speaking culture, […] challenges the dominant Anglo-centric paradigm and reinvigorates debates on the Gothic in Italian culture’ (12).
