RIVISTA DI STORIA DELLA MINIATURA
Abstract
The miniatures of Gospel 227 of the Biblioteca Riccardiana in Florence and Gospel Vat. lat. 42 of the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana are re-examined . They were considered by Angela Daneu Lattanzi to be among the first works produced in the scriptorium of Messina during the time of Archbishop Richard Palmer (1185-1192). Although it is not possible to find confirmation of their production in the scriptorium of Messina, even in light of recent studies that emphasize the mobility of scribes and miniaturists in Norman Sicily, the dating of the miniatures to the 1180s still appears to be the most convincing.
