Abstract
This doctoral research focuses above the study of Italian neofascism in the context of Rome,
considering how quantitatively relevant it has been there and the national importance of this local
case. A long term approach was chosen in order to identify the original characteristics and the
developmental paths. This research chronologically moves therefore from the first specifically
neofascist occurrences after the liberation of Rome and the neofascist movements arisen in the first
postwar period. A special attention has been paid to the relationship between these movements,
most of which characterized by illegal and small terrorist activities, and the Movimento Sociale
Italiano (MSI), the party born in December 1946 as the lawful and parliamentary expression of
neofascism. A long period extraparliamentary tradition so started alongside the long path the legal
party took within the institutions, based on the claim of a typically antisystemic and revolutionary
mentality. The deriving relationship, though tending to parallelism, kept a contradictory dialectic
and a certain level of reciprocal exchange. From this point of view Italian neofascism is
characterized by a growing internal tension as well as by an inborn conflict with the antifascist and
democratic Italian context. That tension determined through years (both within the MSI and the
extraparliamentary area) an inclination to nonrecognition of leading figures, which appears to be a
paradox considering within a political mentality where the hierarchical principle has an archetypal
value. Passing through the 1968 protests, the internal conflict grew faster with a more distinctly
generational meaning and the radicalization of revolutionary motifs, imploding in a very violent
though very short period of armed struggle.
