Abstract
One of characters in Mickiewicz's Pan Tadeusz, the Earl (a courageous man, but also a boaster) uses to tell about a brave deed of his: once in Sicily he conquered, with his own servants, a burglars' shelter named "Birbante Rocca" (Burglar's Castle or Rock). The author tackles the linguistic problems concerning the genesis of this pseudo-Italian place-name (in Italian it would be rather "Rocca Birbante"). The structure of this name could derive by way of structural borrowing from such English place-names as those well known to Mickiewicz for instance from Walter Scott's works (Halidon Hill, Nightmare Abbey and so on).
