Abstract
In the last century, humans put a strain on the environment endangering the ecosystems’ resilience, hence the introduction of two key concepts: sustainability and sustainable development. Circular and bioeconomy are the main pillars of the challenge presented by these concepts. In this context, wood could play an important role as a natural, renewable and bountiful material. The necessity to re-think the whole forest-wood value chain comes from the fact that even the few well-known assessed ones in Italy may be threatened by climatic changes, pests and environmental stresses in the future. Of course, the first focus is forests’ conservation, but we need to bear in mind their role in territories economy as well. Indeed, forest-wood chain must become more efficient. Forest wood chain residues and poor-quality wood usually become biomass for energy. Because of the quick development of forest biorefinery, the elementary constituents of wood should be considered as an opportunity, as opposed to building biomass plant for energy purposes only. Forest biomass and wood residues have interesting applications: they can be recovered by biorefineries in order to obtain different biochemicals and, therefore, many end products. In Italy, forest biorefineries are not well developed so the first contribute of this work is to suggest the establishment of a new forest biorefinery, which would add value to the whole chain and allow to look at the gaps along the chain itself. In recent years, sweet chestnut wood (Castanea sativa Mill.) coming from the short supply chain in Central Italy has frequently showed chromatic aberrations, threatening the whole chain. Discolored wood may still be useful to a forest biorefinery, both on large and small scale. The last goal of this thesis is to present the modification of a commercial waterborne acrylic varnish by addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) recovered from the forest-wood chain residues and to analyze its performance when applied on European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Norway spruce wood (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.). Finally, this paper offers new eco-friendly coatings for wood protection against fungi, solar radiation, water impregnation and physical damage. The different formulations were analyzed in order to test coating viscosity, coating uptake, artificial weathering (xenon sunlight and wet cycles), resistance to fungi (Gloeophyllum trabeum, brown rot, Trametes versicolor, white rot, and blue stain Aureobasidium pullulans and Sclerophoma pithyophila), physical tests (adhesion, impact and scratch tests), water permeability by means of contact angle, chemical analysis by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and morphological analysis by Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation.
