Abstract
In analyzing the greenhouse gas emissions in terrestrial atmosphere, the studies about the role
of vegetation in the carbon exchange regulation are relevant. In this context, the CarboeuropeIP monitoring network consists of more than one hundred monitoring towers all over Europe, using Eddy Covariance technique for the CO2 and H2O exchanges measurements. These sites are quite diversified for geographic position, climatic
characteristics and for vegetation cover (Plant Functional Types). In this work an evaluation of the representativeness of this network is done, as regards European territory where towers are situated and in terms of climatic end ecophysiological characteristics. At this aim, both eddy towers data and spatialized data are compared.Two analysis methods are used: spatial analysis techniques in Geographical Information
System (GIS) environment, and an approach using Self Organizing Maps (SOM).A good correlation between tower parameters and spatialized data is found in both analyses.A representativeness linked to sites location is investigated and moreover an “ecophysiological” representativeness is found related to variables forming the considered domain and not only to geographical distribution. The analysis also permits to propose a new site arrangement, finding more representative areas in Europe, where new sites could increase network representativeness.
The achieved results allow an analysis about European ecosystems, by monitoring and
quantifying carbon exchanges between land and atmosphere, and permit the evaluation of the
network in the considered domain providing indication about its improvement.
