Abstract
Among the productive activities exploiting natural resources, we tried to develop an innovative approach applied to the field of mining, in order to enhance stone materials, improve quarrying techniques and, at the same time, limit the negative impacts on the environment. A "case study" was identified in the quarries of "Manciano Sandstone" owned by the company "Pietre Santafiora S.r.l.". From these sites, world recognized ornamental stones are extracted and used in coatings and flooring for indoors and outdoors. The study started with an introductory part in which two different aspects are described: • stone materials: the various classifications, properties and importance of discontinuities of: sedimentary structures, biogenic structures and rock alteration processes; • quarrying activities, extraction techniques, types of quarries, regulatory aspects and restitution planning at the end of quarrying. The study continued with a large descriptive part concerning the “Manciano Sandstone”, its available scientific bibliography and its regional and local geological context. At the end of this section, study methods were also described, in particular, classical and innovative survey techniques (that were) applied to the quarrying sites identified. Acquired data have been reported and analyzed, providing scientific and applicative insights for both productive and commercial purposes.
