Abstract
The article discusses the much debated question of Petronius’ attitude towards Seneca. Through closer analysis of some passages of the Satyrica, notably in Quartilla’s episode and in the Cena Trimalchionis, the author mantains that Petronius parodies Seneca’s subtle philosophical disquisitions on justice and clemency, in order to add complexity to the novel’s characters. By parodying passages from Seneca’s De constantia sapientis, De clementia, De ira and Epistulae, Petronius depicts Quartilla’s hypocrite use of stoicism, as well as Trimalchio’s megalomania and cultural pretensions.
