Abstract
This research focuses on one of the most important events of World War II: the landing of Salerno on September 1943. In the fact, it has always been considered as a tactics lab, in which both awareness of the environmental conditions and proper amphibious landing techniques played a fundamental role. At the same time, Operation Avalanche was a crucial episode in the Italian campaign, as it was the starting episode in the final clash between the solid self-confidence of the Allies and the tireless opposition of the German that would lead to the liberation of our country in April of 1945. It also addresses the interweaving realities of the "liberators" on one side and that of the occupated-liberated Southern Italian along with the Italoamerican population on the other. The elements emerging with greater force are the following: 1) The guidelines of the Allied administration, showing the differences between the British conception (authoritarian and colonialist) and the American (hegemonic and cooperative); 2) The contrast with the local territory, invested by the lumbering Allied presence; 3) The mentality gap and mutual prejudices, to be swept away. Finally, the inextricable intertwining between historical diachrony and geographical synchrony, between the occurring of political-military events and the geographicalmaterial junctures of war, is explained. This complex interpretation is supported by a detailed knowledge of the available literature and by a large quantity of first-hand Anglo-Saxon documents (ACC at the Archivio Centrale di Stato in Rome and the dedicated sections in the National Archives of London).
