Abstract
Analysis of the effects of Marine Reserves on the ecology and behavior of ichtyofauna represents the aim of this work. The study was carried out in three Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) of the Western Mediterranean countries: Italy, France and Spain. The study area was the “Penisola del Sinis – Isola di Mal di Ventre” MPA (Central-Western Sardinia, Italy). Study on density and distribution of fishes was carried out by comparing areas inside and outside the MPA. In France the study was conducted in the Marine Reserve of Bonifacio (southern Corsica). The predator-prey relationship was tested, at behavioral level, comparing protected and unprotected areas. Utilization of High Speed Camera allows to analize, at very fine temporal scale, the escape response of two different species (Gobius bucchichi and Mullus surmuletus), and showed different behavioural patterns in areas with different protection level. In the Cabo de Palos MPA (Murcia, Spain) the spontaneous activity of shallow icthyofauna was monitored. Diving activity was tested in different sites (Diving vs. No-Diving) with the use of remote video cameras. The results revealed that it was possible to test the Reserve effect by considering also behavioral variables. Behavioral approaches are very interesting for the managing body of a Marine Reserve. There was new evidence to confirm or reinforce actions already taken for the conservation of marine resources. Moreover these approaches provide a useful tool for the management of the activity at No-impact sites that have been increasing in the last years in MPAs. In order to preserve a natural resourse it is important to consider the way the resource is utilised, and not only the drawdown from it. This concept represents a new approach to the management of MPAs.
