Abstract
Over the last thirty years the higher education sector has witnessed several changes. Factors like “massification” of higher education, cuts in public funding, a greater competition and the “marketization” of the sector forced institutions to evolve and to apply performance management systems. For this reasons, the aim of this thesis is twofold, to give some evidence on how performance management systems can be implemented in higher education institutions, and to provide some insights about the barriers and the potential benefits. To answer the research question, a case study was carried out involving the University of Tuscia.
The main contribution of this thesis lies in the analysis of the first empirical case study which integrates all strategic areas of higher education institutions, i.e. teaching, research and administrative services, and that takes into account all performance dimensions, i.e. efficiency, effectiveness and quality. Furthermore, this research provides relevant suggestions for managers of higher education institutions.
