Abstract
This study inquires into artistic patronage of four roman noble families, Massimo, Altemps, Naro and Colonna through 1600-1650. The research through private archives bringed a lot unpublisched documents that point out new attributions for painted decorations in the palaces and chapels of above-mentioned families in Rome and surrounding areas, such as Gallese (Altemps), Paliano and Genazzano (Colonna). The data obtained, then, had been compared to verify similar or different manners in the artistic choices, trying to single out specific aspects of each personal cultural taste.
In conclusion the study discussed the origin and development of the art market in the early Seventheenth-Century Rome adding new information above people involved in the sale of paintings, their shops and selling methods.
