Abstract
The manuscript I have found at the Angelica Library in Rome – catalogue number Ms 1671 – is a founding part of this research paper and fits within the study context of the voyage in all of its colourful forms and in its literature. The subject of the diary, the wanderings of an anonymous traveller from Viterbo of the first half of the XVII century along the roads of the Italian states and those of central and northern Europe, is supported by a series of unpublished and rare documents that range from the XVI to the XVIII century, left by the travellers that in those centuries passed through the same territories. The comparison between the reports examined has allowed me to point out their common aspects and those that set them apart according to their stylistic point of view and their intentions. The thesis begins with an introductory part that deals with the world of the traveller in the modern era. I ranged from the symbolic signification the voyage has acquired over the centuries to the more strictly practical aspects of the actual voyage.
A second part contains a series of diaries, reports and memoirs left for posterity by abbots, ambassadors and aristocrats. The main body of the research deals instead with an in depth and detailed study of the abovementioned manuscript, with a textual analysis that deals both with an objective summary of the places visited by the traveller during his voyages throughout Europe as well as a careful study of the style and choice of treated subjects. To conclude, the final section is dedicated to a literary form that runs parallel to that of the physical voyage: the autobiography; I have had a chance to investigate deeply this subject in my most recent years of study.
