Abstract
The strong reduction of the legumes cultivated area, that occurred in recent decades, has led Italy to be largely dependent on exports. In addition, the growing demand for vegetable protein supplies for feeding livestock has led to the recent discovery of some crops, such as chickpea and lupine, which can be easily incorporated into cropping systems of central-southern Italy and ensure satisfactory performance. To get a largescale cultivation, however, a work of selection, improvement and introduction of genotypes from other countries with Mediterranean climate is necessary. These were the objectives of this study, during which the different lines of chickpea and lupine have been compared in order to evaluate their agronomic characteristics. Furthermore, different sowing dates and crop densities were compared in order to get information on the best time for sowing these species and the stability of production of different genotypes. We collected data about biometric characteristics of plants and samples of grain harvested, both of chickpea and lupine, were sent to the laboratory of the Department of Animal Production for the analysis of nutritional value. Field experiments conducted have identified some genotypes that, while not having reached very high levels of production, can be considered sufficient to continue the improvement process. Results showed that chickpea and lupine were potentially suitable for use in animal feed.
