Abstract
The study focuses on beech stands in transition to high forest and selective beech coppices in state of abandonment, in the Apennines of Abruzzo, Tuscany and Emilia- Romagna (Italy), analyzing data from 15 permanent ad experimental sample plots. Unlike what usually described in literature, the yield analysis of the stands in transition to high forest shows high rates of volume increment, even when the stands are over 100 years old. The phenomenon can be ascribed to the progressive decrease of the human pressure over the last decades and to the partial improvement of the soil fertility. The selective beech coppices examined show distinguishing characteristics, such as considerable biomass accumulation during the abandonment period and a high volume increment. In order to achieve a management, that is both sustainable for the ecosystem and economically viable, experimental silvicultural choices have been tested. In beech stands in transition to high forest, in order to reduce the actual uniformity, preparation cuts were tested to promote the natural renovation in small areas. In abandoned coppices the restoration of the coppice selection system and the convertion to high-stand procedure were compared.
