Abstract
The attention to non-invasiveness in restoration operations, and even more in diagnostic investigations, is an approach based on respect for the materials that constitute the work of art. The materials of a work of art have a value. Therefore, every diagnostic analysis should have the character of the efficacy in relation to the prefixed purpose, usually connected to the restoration intervention. The diagnostic analysis is designed at establishing the most suitable intervention strategy aimed at ensuring the restoration and conservation of the artwork. Often diagnostic investigations are designed to study pigments to find information on their origin, on the pictorial technique used, to perform philological restorations. In the study of paintings, the diagnosis is requested for the support characterization with the identification of the textile fibers constituting the canvas and much more rarely with the identification of the wood botanical species. Sometimes, samples taken to fulfill a specific purpose may provide the opportunity for further analysis. In this case, it is a duty to give a report, even in a vision of respect for the work that begins properly with the knowledge of materials. This paper presents the analysis of a sample taken from the wood painting representing San Giorgio e it Drago (Saint George and the Dragon) exposed in the Municipal Gallery of Spoleto, a little town in Central Italy, aimed at determining the type of fiber and its morphological characteristics, and the botanical species of wood support.
