Abstract
The purpose of this article is to offer an analysis of the historical case study of Giacomo Lignana as the first promoter for teaching and learning Russian as an L2 at a university level in Italy between 1861 and 1891. The Italian linguist Lignana can be considered the forefather of Slavic – and Russian – studies at a university level in post-unification Italy. This article attempts to examine Lignana’s organisation of teaching and learning foreign languages, including the Russian language, in a public institution with a modern approach.
