Abstract
Chioggia and its territory have been at the centre of various studies thanks to the uniqueness and geographical peculiarity of their site. Situated on the southern edge of Venice lagoon, between the sea and the dry land, it looks, on one side, onto the open spaces of the sea and, on the other, onto the lagoonal expanses. Chioggia represents the ending point of mid-southern Veneto on the Paduan axes, at the end of a grid of canals and rivers which then direct towards the low Polesine. A landscape which originally did not have any clear boundaries, though ranging from fresh to brackish, and which was characterized by the alternation of land and water, land and sea, and where the human presence for centuries adapted itself to the tide’s natural rhythms by recomposing with the earth what the sea had torn. A territory which represents a vegetative and faunistic habitat with a rich biodiversity. Chioggia was a lagoonal centre whose history was originally linked to the thriving production of salt, in the medieval age, and which was later strongly entwined to Venice whose decisions had a large influence on the current territorial assets. Environmental subjects such as canals, amphibious areas, rivers, banks, dunes, the shore as well as sheets of water have all progressively adapted themselves to the needs of its developing economy. Besides the outline of a geographical, historical and ecological profile of Chioggia territory – including its representation as well as its main anthropical alterations and some brief explanations on the lagoonal environment – this dissertation presents a thick chronological interlacement of events among which the many-century-old human work of deviation of rivers which flowed into the Venetian lagoon as well as the season of drainages at any cost which have perverted the nature of the area also in inhabited zones are highlighted. From the end of nineteenth century until the Sixties of the twentieth century the loss as well as the erosion of the coastal area took place, they were the consequence of the transformation of the lagoon as well as of the valley areas and of the expansion of the urbanization (particularly in the first half of the twentieth century) due to the demographic impact as well as to mass tourism.
